An NPN is a Natural Product Number allocated to a Natural Health Product by the Canadian government after being assessed for safety, efficacy, and overall compliance and receiving approval for sale in Canada.
No, you must have an NPN to sell your Natural Health Product in Canada.
To receive an NPN you must submit an application package to Health Canada. This package requires different documentation to be provided depending on the product classification. There are 3 classes of Natural Health Products,
Class I: All the ingredients in the product are compliant under ONE monograph. These take approximately 60 days to receive Health Canada approval.
Class II: All the ingredients in the product are compliant under MULTIPLE monographs. These take approximately 90 days to receive Health Canada approval.
Class III: One or more ingredient in the product is NOT compliant with any existing monographs and therefore requires evidence to support the safety for its use, and/or efficacy of a claim related to the ingredient. These take approximately 210 days to receive Health Canada approval.
